Abortion is the number one surgical procedure in the United States. There have been over 50 million abortions since 1973. Many women and men make the choice of having an abortion because of the crisis they find themselves in at the time. The process of having an abortion and recovering from an abortion can be very traumatic. Just like other traumas, people use defense mechanisms to try and forget such as denial, rationalization, suppression and repression etc. Often later the memories return and the reality of what has occurred can no longer be avoided. Some women and men also experience Post Abortion Syndrome or Stress, in which the symptoms are similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These symptoms can occur right after the abortion or years later. To find out if you may be suffering from Post Abortion Stress click here. You can also read more research regarding common psychological reactions women experience after abortion here. To find out what makes you at greater risk for post abortion stress, click here. It is important that you find the support and understanding you need as you are going through this difficult time. Recovery is possible and you can find freedom from the shame and secrecy that often accompanies this issue. There are stages of recovery and walking through them with a trained counselor and/or support group is the first step. We often recommend walking through the recovery process with your spouse regardless if they were the one you had the abortion with or not. Contact us today to begin your healing journey.
